Project Introduction

Dunhuang Contemporary International Artist-in-Residence (DCAM AIR) is jointly initiated by Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum and Dunhuang Culture and Tourism Group, with the special support from Jangala Dunhuang in 2025. The project is dedicated to promoting the development of Dunhuang's cultural and artistic ecology, presenting the rich and diverse world of human art and thought, exploring the contemporary translation of traditional culture and the historical logic of modern Chinese art in the context of linking classical and modern knowledge, and establishing an international platform for artistic practice and theoretical research with an open vision of China as a venue.

DCAM AIR warmly welcomes and regularly invites artists, curators, and researchers to join us in Dunhuang for a period of time to think, study, and create. During the residency program, we encourage artists to immerse themselves in cross-cultural exchanges, explore the profound heritage of Dunhuang, and draw inspiration for their creative work.

2025 Spring Dunhuang International Artist-in-Residence Application Details Disciplines

We sincerely invite applications for our art and research programs:

Art Categories: Sound Art, Painting, Digital Art, Public Art, Performance, Architecture (2 positions available).

Research Programs: Writing, Curation, and Research (1 position available).

Guidelines for Artists

  1. Age of application: 25 years old or above.

  2. Nationality: Unlimited.

  3. Required Materials: Submit a detailed resume, examples of recent work (articles, portfolios, video links, etc.), and a completed application form. Please ensure that all submissions are as detailed and comprehensive as possible.

  4. Submission: Download the application form at www.dunhuangartmuseum.com and email it to air@dunhuangartmuseum.com with the subject line “DCAM AIR + Your Name.” Alternatively, you may upload your portfolio via the provided QR code.

  5. Applicants are permitted to present their residency project proposals in multiple formats such as PDF or images.

  6. Note: Only digital submissions are accepted. The program does not accommodate postal submissions, and the program committee will not assume responsibility for the return of any physical materials received.

  7. Applicant artists must comply with local laws and regulations.

  8. Artists are required to donate one work to the Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum's collection during the residency program, and the donation will be determined by mutual agreement between the artist and the museum.

Key Dates

Deadline: February 28, 2025 (24:00 UTC).

Selection Announcement: Shortlisted artists will be announced on March 15, 2025, and selected candidates will receive notification via official email.

Residency Duration: March 20- May 30, 2025 (excluding May 1-May7).

Selection Method

The selection of shortlisted artists will be conducted by the esteemed jury panel invited by the Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum.

Program Benefits

Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum, Dunhuang Culture and Tourism Group, and Jangala will jointly provide the selected artist with:

  1. One round-trip transportation for the artist to and from Dunhuang (up to RMB 3,000 domestically and up to RMB 5,000 internationally, with the VAT invoice required).

  2. Creative Funding: Artists may apply for partial financial support to cover production costs incurred during the creative process. Applications should include a detailed list of proposed projects, a comprehensive implementation plan, and a clear allocation of funds.

  3. Accommodation at the Jangala and shuttle service.

  4. Provision of studios (Yardang Geo-park Studio, Jangala Studio).

  5. Project publicity and promotion.

  6. Participation in exhibitions at the Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum and its partner organizations.

  7. Support from Dunhuang's local cultural and tourism resources, including Mingsha Mountain Crescent Spring, Dunhuang Yardang National Geopark, and Yumen Pass, for artistic creation.

  8. Visits from Dunhuang researchers.

Special Statement

  1. Declaration of originality: The applicant's submission must be an original creation, free from any infringement of others' rights and interests. It must not have been previously exhibited or distributed through any commercial channels. Otherwise, the organizing committee reserves the right to cancel the applicant's qualification and to pursue legal responsibility.

  2. All intellectual property rights arising from the resident project shall belong to the applicant himself; the exhibition and publication rights of the works shall belong jointly to the Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum and the applicant.

  3. Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum, Dunhuang Culture and Tourism Group, and Jangala have the right to publicize all selected and shortlisted proposals online.

  4. Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum (www.dunhuangartmuseum.com) and WeChat service account, Official Account, REDnote, and other online official media are the designated information release channels for this activity.

  5. The final interpretation rights of this program are reserved by the Shanghai Yangpu District Fucai Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum.

About Dunhuang Culture and Tourism Group
