Dunhuang Chinese New Year Project

"Dunhuang Chinese New Year Project | Initiated by the Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum, this project invites artists and designers to create works inspired by Dunhuang and themed around the Chinese New Year. The project aims to rediscover the connection between Dunhuang and traditional festivals, seeking new expressions of artistic classics in contemporary Chinese festivals and daily life. The project will meet with the public once a year, adding a touch of spring color from Dunhuang to each Chinese New Year.

02

Artist Guided Tours and Lantern Passing

The Mogao Caves of Dunhuang are carved into the 1.6-kilometer cliff on the eastern slope of Mingsha Mountain, starting from the Sixteen Kingdoms period and reaching an unprecedented spectacular scene during the Northern Dynasties, Tang Dynasty, and the early period of the Five Dynasties and the Song Dynasty. "Stars Suspended Over the River" is created by artists Chen Zhihao and Zhou Zhenru, simulating the possible scenario of numerous caves in the Mogao Caves being lit up by lanterns on the night of the Laba Festival.

03

Lantern Lighting Ceremony

"Fortune Deer Ascends" is created by artist Zheng Jing. The work features the nine-colored divine deer carrying the blessings of the Dunhuang eight lanterns and meeting the ascending Qing in Shanghai. The work combines the nine-colored deer with the lamp tree intention in the Medicine Buddha Sutra transformation on the north wall of Cave 220 in the Mogao Caves during the early Tang Dynasty. The golden Qing is transformed into a ribbon winding upwards, blending art and technology, echoing the tradition of the Laba Festival, and both Shanghai and Dunhuang wish each other a happy holiday.
